Your chance to win a hiking holiday in Jordan

Situated at an ancient crossroads of the Middle East, Jordan has stories to tell as old as time. But it’s not just the rich and varied history that draws millions of tourists to the country each year.

With stunning natural vistas and plentiful opportunities to explore them, Jordan is quickly establishing itself as the region’s adventure capital.

In fact, it’s now one of the premier destinations for hikers from around the globe.

If you’ve ever dreamt of exploring the ruins of Petra and hiking through the otherworldly Wadi Rum, you’ve got the chance to do just that.

We’re giving away an epic five-day hiking adventure in Jordan, thanks to Much Better Adventures and the Jordan Tourism Board.

You’ll climb Jordan’s highest mountain, sleep under the stars in a Bedouin camp, and swim (or float) in the Dead Sea.

If this sounds good to you, read on to discover what makes Jordan such an incredible adventure destination and how you can win.

Explore Wadi Rum

Famed for its striking resemblance to the surface of Mars, Wadi Rum is a valley of red sandstone and granite that has been home to humans for millennia.

Ancient petroglyphs dot the rock walls, traces of human life that existed before the Bedouin who currently inhabit the area.

The sun and the sand create spectacular melting watercolours at dawn and dusk, and the night brings clear views of the cosmos.

Everyone I’ve spoken to who has visited Wadi Rum has told me it’s one of the most beautiful, impactful, and memorable places they’ve ever been.

It’s high on my list of places to visit, as it also happens to be a spectacular hiking destination.

As part of your prize of hiking in Jordan, you’ll spend two days in Wadi Rum. Climb the highest peak in Jordan, the 1,800m Um Ad Dami, and look out across the sands into Saudi Arabia.

Then descend into a remote Bedouin camp, experience traditional food, and marvel at the stars above. On the second day, you’ll be able to watch the sunrise from the top of a sand dune, soaking in the deep reds of the desert.

Visit Petra

Petra, Jordan

No trip to Jordan is complete without a visit to the iconic Petra.

Voted as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Petra is an ancient city built around trading routes that flourished over a thousand years ago.

Carved into rose-red sandstone and with a highly sophisticated system of rainwater collection, the city was once home to tens of thousands of people.

Nowadays, the empty halls are a testament to the skill and power of a people long since gone.

For a unique experience, you can hike across the desert and pass through the mountains that guard the approach to the city. Upon reaching a hidden plateau high above the chasm of Wadi Siyyagh, climb the age-old steps down into the city, just as the Nabateans would have done thousands of years ago.

The best part is, this is exactly what you’ll be doing if you go hiking in Jordan with Much Better Adventures.

Swim in the Dead Sea

At around 430m below sea level, this is the lowest point you can stand on Earth, but that’s only one part of the mystery and beauty of the Dead Sea.

With a salinity content that’s 9.6 times higher than the ocean, almost no life can survive in its waters. It does, however, make for a unique experience to float on the surface.

While the landscape is harsh, it’s also mesmerising.

Towers of salt stand sentinel along the shoreline, while the sun shimmers in green-blue water that vanishes into the sky.

The Dead Sea is like nowhere else on Earth, and it’s the perfect way to finish your hiking adventure in Jordan.

And of course, the people

It’s a cliché to say that a place has the friendliest people, but in Jordan’s case, it might just be true.

Generous in spirit, warm in welcome, and always smiling: you’ll fall in love with the people as much as you will with the country.
